Carlye’s Artist Statement

I paint hope.

I paint hope with bold vibrant colors and gutsy strokes.

I create painted portrayals of the often spiritual, always powerful and beautiful intrinsic qualities of true good found in us and in this world.

Despair, hate, fear…these are as easy for us to see and experience in a daily setting as brown is in the dessert. And yet when you are willing to listen and bear witness, the best things in life (like love, hope, justice, mercy, courage…) exist and need to be seen, nurtured and shared in their full colors.

It is my endeavor as an artist to scratch below the surface of the beauty of the world around us. I am not just painting landscapes, I paint soulscapes. I seek to entice the art observer to question what they feel and experience in the colors and lines of the subject matter and where their own experiences align with or harmonize with my own experience of the muse. I do not paint to capture the image of a flower, rather the humility in the beauty of a petal, the wonder of a living and growing leaf. I do not paint people’s images, I paint the courage I see in bodies that have fought for what they believe in or the justice sought for within people’s actions and souls.

I create to unveil the true beauties and life affirming powers in this life.

In this next chapter in my life I want to continue to create hope while expanding my audience base online as well as continuing to expand my understanding and portrayal of social justice issues facing our world today, to inspire justice and mercy, to evoke the deepest and best parts of our humanity towards action and change. I am particularly interested in growing in my use of symbols and images of social justice in my art as well as learning how to tell stories of injustice visually which lead us to hope.
